The box office had no major shakeups, as there seems to be no end in sight for “Barbenheimer”, but did include one new entry.
“Barbie” remained No. 1 for the fourth weekend in a row. The film grossed another $34 million, making its total gross nearly $1.2 billion. As reported by Variety, “Barbie” star and producer Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig are set to receive major bonuses due to the film’s success. “Barbie” is the second highest-grossing release of all time for Warner Bros. and the highest-grossing film for a female director ever.
Theaters are clearly recognizing the longevity of both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” took a huge blow as it was removed from nearly 900 theaters and 149 theaters added “Oppenheimer” back to their showtime. “Oppenheimer” raked in $19 million this weekend, returning to the No. 2 spot after being surpassed by “Meg 2: The Trench” last weekend. “Barbie” still maintains the most theater showings, holding strong at over 4,000 theaters domestically.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” added another roughly 200 theaters from their release last week. They hold the No. 3 and No. 4 spots respectively, combining for about $28 million this weekend.
“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” debuted at No. 5 with a $6.5 million opening weekend, bumping “Haunted Mansion” down a spot to No. 6.
