Many theaters offered $4 tickets this past Sunday to celebrate the second annual National Cinema Day. Due to this, the box office had a lower weekend gross than the previous weekend, but had some familiar faces still on the leaderboard.
“Gran Turismo”, the film about the real life story of a gamer turned race car driver, debuted domestically at No. 1 with a $17.3 million weekend. The film was initially supposed to release domestically on Aug. 11, but delayed its release two weeks to Aug. 25. However, it did release on Aug. 11 in most international markets and has grossed nearly $54 million worldwide.
“Barbie” maintained the No. 2 position for the second week in a row. Grossing $17.1 million, “Barbie” was close to taking the No. 1 spot from “Gran Turismo.”
The newest DC release “Blue Beetle” dropped to the No. 3 spot, pulling in $13 million in its second weekend. The film has grossed a total of $82 million worldwide, a poor showing considering its $104 million budget.
“Oppenheimer” came in at No. 4 with a $9 million weekend. Another solid weekend showing has pushed its total domestic gross past the $300 million mark.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” rounded out the top five with a $6 million weekend. It has been a success for Paramount and will soon pass the $100 million mark domestically.
Note: The box office totals are estimated.
