There was a shakeup in the box office this weekend. It looks like the “Barbenheimer” train is finally running out of steam.
“Barbie” dropped down three spots to the No. 5 position while “Oppenheimer” fell completely out of the top five to No. 8. Three new releases dominated the weekend.
“The Nun II” of “The Conjuring” universe pulled in $33 million over the weekend. “The Conjuring” horror films are highly popular and are becoming a growing franchise with the “Annabelle” films and the main “Conjuring” films under their belt. “The Nun”, the first film released in 2018, pulled in $54 million in its first weekend and grossed $117 million during its entire run. The sequel has some work to do to catch up.
Besides “Barbie”, “The Equalizer 3” was the only returning film in the top five this weekend. The film had a short drop to No. 2, but its $12 million weekend was a 65 percent drop from last weekend.
At the No. 3 spot is “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.” The third film in the franchise only pulled in $10 million domestically in its debut weekend. The first film, released in 2002, was a success, grossing a total of $240 million domestically. The 2016 sequel grossed $60 million domestically, but it will be a challenge for the third film to reach that.
“Jawan” provided a box office surprise at the No. 4 spot. The Bollywood production pulled in $6 million in only 813 theaters in the United States. The film has been massive internationally, becoming the second highest grossing film worldwide this past weekend.
