Welcome to Lately Listens, a recurring column recapping the best film and television podcast episodes I’ve been listening to lately!
“Raiders of the Lost Podcast” – “WGA New Contract with AMPTP Explained”
Plan on seeing lots of “Raiders of the Lost Podcast” episodes throughout the tenure of this column. Twin brothers James and Anthony Deveney consistently deliver informative and engaging episodes about all things film and television. This episode in particular was informational given recent events. They run through the entire new contract that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) recently signed to end the five-month strike with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Give this episode a listen to find a new podcast and get some valuable information about the writers’ new deal!
“The Town with Matthew Belloni” – “Lessons From the ‘Must-See TV’ Era, with Warren Littlefield”
“The Town” delivers interesting film and television tidbits in short, digestible episodes. This episode delves into the era of peak television in the ’90s. Host Matthew Belloni uses his personal experiences to contrast the network television days with the current landscape of streaming. Guest Warren Littlefield, a producer and former National Broadcasting Company (NBC) executive, gave his own behind-the-scenes experiences to give context to how the ’90s became the peak era of network television. This was a fun listen that made me view streaming from a new perspective!
“The Journal.” – “The Showdown Over Hulu”
“The Journal.”, co-produced by Spotify and The Wall Street Journal, is not a dedicated film and television podcast but features lots of interesting episodes about the business behind films, television and studios. “The Showdown Over Hulu” explains the constantly fluctuating ownership of Hulu and how that is affecting what is being put on the streamer. Currently, Hulu is owned by Disney, but the story of its ownership is a lot more murky. Tune in to “The Journal.” to gain some insight into the business behind film and television!
