New films and re-releases are going strong as we enter the final weekends of the year. This weekend’s box office made history.
Hayao Miyazaki’s hotly-anticipated new anime, “The Boy and the Heron,” earned $13 million and took the top spot in the domestic box office, becoming the first original anime to do so. Currently, “The Secret World of Arrietty” is the highest-grossing Studio Ghibli film, with a total lifetime gross of $19 million. If “The Boy and the Heron” continues its hot start, it will easily become Studio Ghibli’s highest-grosser.
“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” continued its impressive box office run with a $9 million fourth weekend. This film has surpassed $260 million worldwide, easily making a profit from its $100 million budget.
“Godzilla Minus One,” another international release, also continued its success at the box office with an $8.5 million second weekend. The Japanese production has been a surprise in the domestic market, earning nearly half its $57 million global box office domestically.
“Trolls Band Together” pulled in another $6 million in its fourth weekend. It’s earned a respectable $175 million worldwide.
“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” the newest concert film on the market, earned $5.5 million in its second weekend, suffering a 75% drop in earnings from its opening. Unfortunately for Beyoncé, “Renaissance” is not doing Swift numbers.
