This weekend’s box office featured a complete takeover by Timothée Chalamet and “Wonka.” The Willy Wonka origin film dominated the box office in its opening weekend, pulling in $39 million. That’s as sweet as Wonka’s chocolate.
The second highest-grossing film was “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” pulling in $6 million in its fifth weekend. This film continues its strong run, now culminating to a $290 million worldwide gross.
After a historic opening weekend, “The Boy and the Heron” faced a 57% drop in its second weekend, falling to third place and grossing $5.5 million, compared to a $13 million opening weekend. However, the Japanese animated production has been a major success internationally. The international market has comprised $87 million of its $110 million worldwide gross.
“Godzilla Minus One” maintains a spot on the leaderboard with a $5 million third weekend. While also being a Japanese production, this film has found more success than “The Boy and the Heron” in the domestic market, pulling $34 million of its $64 million worldwide gross domestically.
“Trolls Band Together” rounds out the top five with a $4 million fifth weekend.
