Right off the heels of the winter holidays, audiences find themselves in another extended weekend owing to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This takes the typical three-day box office and stretches it to four, with a similar effect on film profit.
This weekend’s box office saw domination by musicals. Tina Fey’s musical adaptation of the 2004 comedy classic “Mean Girls” took over theaters, pulling in $33 million and sending it to the No. 1 spot. The film has nearly surpassed its $36 million budget in just its opening weekend. “Wonka” is still making money, pulling in $11 million in its fifth weekend and holding at the No. 3 spot.
Jason Statham’s newest action film “The Beekeeper” also had a great opening weekend, grossing $19 million over the four-day weekend and taking the No. 2 spot.
“Anyone But You” and “Migration” swapped spots from last weekend, coming in at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Both films have found success, with “Anyone But You” doubling its reported budget of $25 million.
“The Book of Clarence,” a new biblical comedy produced by Jay-Z, bombed in its opening weekend, grossing only $3 million on a budget of $40 million and falling to the No. 9 spot.
