The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced yesterday, with films such as “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” piling up nominations.

“Oppenheimer” earned 13 nominations, most notably Best Picture, Cinematography and Film Editing. Director Christopher Nolan was nominated for Best Director and Adapted Screenplay and is still looking for his first Oscar win. Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt were nominated for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

“Poor Things” followed closely with 11 nominations. Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. “Poor Things” was nominated for Best Picture, making this director Yorgos Lanthimos’ second nomination after  2019’s “The Favourite.” The eclectic visual tone of “Poor Things” was recognized with nominations in Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling and Cinematography.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” received 10 nominations, including Lily Gladstone’s Best Actress. She is the first Native American woman to be nominated in that category. Director Martin Scorsese is also the oldest person to be nominated for Best Director, at age 81. Scorsese surpassed Steven Speilberg as being the most nominated living director in the category.

While Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in “Barbie,” director Greta Gerwig and lead actress and producer Margot Robbie were nowhere to be found in their respective categories. Despite being 2023’s highest-grossing film, “Barbie” received just eight total nominations.

“Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” — international dramas from France and the United Kingdom, respectively — received five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Directing. “Past Lives,” while nominated for Best Picture, did not see a Best Director nomination for director Celine Song.

Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” picked up seven nominations, while Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” received five. “American Fiction,” Cord Jefferson’s feature directorial debut, also received five nominations, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay.

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the sequel to 2018’s victor in this category.

The Oscars are set to premiere on Sunday, March 10. For more information and a list of all nominees, visit https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2024.
