This weekend’s box office proved to be the biggest shake-up of the year so far.
“Mean Girls,” which had maintained No. 1 status since its release on Jan. 12, dropped to No. 6, grossing $4 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to $92.7 million.
“Argylle,” the new spy thriller starring Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World” franchise, “The Help,” “Spider-Man 3”), Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel,” “The Witcher,” “Enola Holmes”) and Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “Vice,” “Jojo Rabbit”), debuted at No. 1 this weekend. Despite its No. 1 ranking, the film bombed at the box office, grossing $18 million domestically on a reported $200 million budget.
The film earned mixed critical and audience reactions, including a generally unfavorable Metascore of 36 on Metacritic and a C⁺ rating on CinemaScore. It fared slightly better among audience members on Rotten Tomatoes with a 72% audience score but maintained a low 35% critics score due to a “convoluted plot and overlong runtime,” according to the critics’ consensus.
“The Chosen,” a drama series about the life of Jesus Christ, premiered the first three episodes of its fourth season in theaters, grossing an impressive $6 million. The episodic event was only released domestically.
“The Beekeeper,” “Wonka” and “Migration” rounded out the top five.
