Two new films took over this weekend’s box office.
“Bob Marley: One Love,” a biopic about the legendary Jamaican reggae artist, grossed $27.7 million in its debut weekend. The film premiered on Valentine’s Day and has grossed a total of $80 million worldwide, an excellent start considering its reported $70 million budget.
The film has been praised by audiences, earning a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A on CinemaScore, which measures audience reaction. However, critics took the film to task, grading the film 43% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 43 Metascore on Metacritic.
“One Love” is outpacing fellow debut film “Madame Web,” which grossed $15.15 million in its opening weekend. The film also premiered on Valentine’s Day and has grossed $51.5 million worldwide. Not a bad start considering its $80 million budget, but the film was poorly received by audiences and critics alike, garnering a 13% critics score and a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Argylle” fell to No. 3 in its third weekend, grossing $4.7 million to bring its total to $77.3 million worldwide — a poor outing for production company Apple TV⁺, given its $200 million budget.
“Migration” and “The Chosen” rounded out the top five. “The Chosen” released episodes four, five and six of season four in theaters this weekend.
