Box office returns are a bit behind this year, compared to last.
2023’s total box office came in at $8.9 billion, the highest since 2019’s pre-pandemic $11.4 billion box office. In a year-to-date comparison, 2024 is slightly behind 2023 in total gross for the first quarter of the year. From Jan. 1 to April 2, the total gross for 2023 was $1.8 billion, while 2024’s $1.6 billion is 8.8% behind in the same time period.
However, there is still time to turn it around, with big releases such as “The Fall Guy,” “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool 3,” “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Gladiator 2” set to hit theaters this year.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” had a strong opening weekend. Its $80 million domestic debut is the second-highest in the Monsterverse franchise. The film has made even more internationally and is closing in on $200 million worldwide. Its opening was the highest-grossing film this weekend.
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” suffered a massive 65.4% drop from its opening, earning $15.6 million in its second weekend to bring its worldwide gross to $108.4 million.
“Dune: Part Two” came in at No. 3 in its fifth weekend, grossing $11.4 million to bring its worldwide gross to $627.3 million, the highest-grossing film of the year so far.
“Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Immaculate” rounded out the top five with $10.3 and $3.3 million weekends, respectively.
