Applications are now open to apply for the Austin Film Society’s (AFS) 2024 AFS Grant for Feature Films. This latest grant cycle focuses on all stages of feature film production, specifically documentary and narrative features over 40 minutes in length.

AFS is offering six types of grants filmmakers can apply for:

The AFS Grant for Features in Production is a cash grant up to $15,000 that can be utilized for pre-production, production or post-production.

The AFS Grant for Features in Development is a one-time cash grant of $10,000 given to two career artists in Texas. This grant will go towards any activity to advance a feature film project currently in development. Only filmmakers with at least one completed and distributed feature film are allowed to apply for this grant.

The North Texas Pioneer Award is a cash award given to filmmakers residing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and surrounding counties. A total of $30,000 is allotted for filmmakers, with awards between $5,000 to $15,000 given to individual feature film projects at any stage.

The New Texas Voices Award is a cash award of $10,000 given to filmmakers “who identify with a community of color traditionally underrepresented in independent film,” according to AFS. Special consultation is also provided. Filmmakers are required to have their first feature film in mid-development to apply, as well as meet various demographic requirements.

The MPS Camera and Lighting Austin Award is given as an in-kind services award of a multi-day camera package rental from MPS Studios. The award has a value up to $10,000 and can only be used by the awarded project and not transferred. Grantees are required to meet MPS Studios’ minimum insurance requirements.

The Stuck On On DCP Award is also given as an in-kind services award. Stuck On On is a post-production company in Austin and is awarding two grantees theatrical digital cinema packages (DCPs) that includes one 2K file creation with delivery not included. Projects can be theatrical documentaries or narrative features, but cannot exceed 100 minutes.

Applications for the 2024 AFS Grant for Feature Films opened on April 16 and will stay open until June 6 at 11:59 p.m. To apply, go to this link and provide the necessary information.  Recipients of grants or awards will be announced in early September.

AFS also offers live webinars to help with the application process. The narrative film webinar will take place on May 20 at 6 p.m., while the documentary film webinar will be held on May 28 at 6 p.m. All webinars will take place on Zoom.

The AFS Grant is an annually renewed development and production fund that has awarded over $2.6 million in cash grants to Texas filmmakers, as well as over $340,000 worth of in-kind goods and services. Most recently, the grant-supported short film “Sangre Violenta / Sangre Violeta” won the Audience Award in the Texas Shorts Competition at SXSW 2024 last month.
