April closes with Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama “Challengers” taking the top spot in this weekend’s box office. The Zendaya-led film grossed $15 million domestically, the highest opening weekend of Guadagnino’s films. Gaudagnino’s next nearest opening weekend was 2017’s “Call Me by Your Name,” which opened to $413,000 in less than a third of the theaters. “Call Me by Your Name” went on to gross $41.5 million worldwide, a number “Challengers” should beat in the next couple of weeks.
“Unsung Hero,” a film about a family’s move from Australia to the United States after the father’s music company fails, debuted with a $7.75 million domestic opening. The film is a semi-autobiographical account of the Smallbone family and their influence on contemporary Christian music.
“Unsung Hero” is the latest film to be produced by Kingdom Story Company, the faith-based production company behind 2024’s “Ordinary Angels” and 2023’s “Jesus Revolution.” The company has a distribution partnership with Lionsgate.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” came in at the No. 3 spot with a $7.2 million fifth weekend. The film has grossed $519.4 million worldwide.
“Civil War” dropped from the top spot to No. 4 in its third weekend. The film grossed $7 million to bring its total domestic run to $56.2 million, making it A24’s second-highest-grossing film domestically behind 2022’s Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”
“Abigail” closed out the top five with a $5.25 million second weekend. “Boy Kills World,” the feature directorial debut of Moritz Mohr starring Bill Skarsgård, debuted with a dismal $1.7 million opening in nearly 2,000 theaters.
This weekend also saw the anniversary re-releases of 1979’s “Alien” and 1999’s “The Mummy,” which grossed $1.6 million and $1 million, respectively.
Note: Box office totals are estimated at the time of writing.
