“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the first in a new planned trilogy and the tenth installment of the franchise, debuted with a strong $56 million in its opening weekend, making it the fourth-highest-grossing domestic film this year. “Kingdom” grossed $72.5 million worldwide, and seems to be well underway to make back its reported budget of $160 million. The film has received mostly positive reviews, with 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.3/10 on IMDb and a B on CinemaScore.
“The Fall Guy” dropped 50.6% in its second weekend, grossing $13.7 million. The action-romance has done slightly better overseas, with $54 million of its total $103.7 million gross coming from the international market. However, the slow second weekend is not a good sign for the weeks to come.
“Challengers” remained at the No. 3 spot, grossing $4.7 million in its third weekend.
“Tarot” had nearly as large a drop as “The Fall Guy,” dropping 46.9% in its second weekend and grossing only $3.45 million.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” remained in the top five for the seventh week in a row, grossing $2.5 million.
In comparison to last year at this time, 2024’s box office is 22.4% behind 2023’s. There’s yet to be a $100 million opening film this year, while 2023 had three by the first week of May, with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
Several franchise sequels will be released this year, including “Despicable Me 4” and “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which made over $1 billion with its first film. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the only MCU project slated for 2024, set to premiere July 26.
