“Hit Man,” Richard Linklater’s newest action feature starring Glen Powell, will premiere in select theaters, including AFS Cinema in Austin, before its June 7 Netflix release.
Screenings at AFS Cinema will run from Friday, May 24 to Thursday, May 30. Special guests, including Linklater, producer Mike Blizzard, hair & makeup designer Tara Cooper and costume designer Julianna Hoffpauir, will attend select screenings during the limited theater run.
Linklater and Blizzard will host a Q&A following the 6:30 p.m. showing on May 24, and Huntsville-native Linklater will stay to introduce the 9:30 p.m. screening. Blizzard will return for a Q&A following the 6 p.m. showing on May 25 and will join Cooper and Hoffpauir for a Q&A after the 2:30 p.m. screening on May 26.
The romance-action-comedy premiered in the U.S. on May 15 at the Paramount Theatre in Austin as part of Powell’s induction into the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Powell, an Austin native, co-wrote the script with Linklater, making this his first feature screenwriting credit. The film has done well critically, earning 7.5/10 from IMDb, 97% from Rotten Tomatoes and 82 from Metacritic.
“Hit Man” follows Gary Johnson, a professor who works a side gig as a fake hitman for his city police department. Things go awry when he falls for a woman who enlists his services, played by Adria Arjona. The story is based on the real Gary Johnson, whose fake hitman cover helped the Houston Police Department arrest 60 individuals.
AFS Cinema is operated by the nonprofit Austin Film Society, founded in 1985 by Linklater. The theater serves as Austin’s only “nonprofit art house theater,” according to its website.
