“Anora,” a comedy-drama from veteran indie director Sean Baker, was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 77th Festival de Cannes, the festival’s top prize. Texan Drew Daniels was the cinematographer for the film, marking his second team-up with Baker after 2021’s “Red Rocket.”
“This has been a dream come true. Sean, I’m in awe of you. Thank you for letting me shoot your films and continuing to challenge and inspire me,” Daniels said in an Instagram post after the award was announced.
Daniels’ other cinematography credits include the Donald Glover-co-created television series “Swarm” and HBO dramas “Euphoria” and “The Idol.” Daniels graduated in 2008 from the Radio-Television-Film program at The University of Texas at Austin.
The Cannes feature film jury, which included director Greta Gerwig and actresses Lily Gladstone and Eva Green, selected the award-winning competition films. The Grand Prix was awarded to Indian-drama “All We Imagine as Light” and the Jury Prize to “Emilia Pérez,” a musical following a cartel boss’s gender transition.
“Anora” is distributed by NEON, the same company behind previous Palme d’Or winners “Parasite,” “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Triangle of Sadness.” There is no set theatrical release date for “Anora” yet.
